Data ProtectionStatistical information has been fully anonymised. In producing statistical information, all reasonable care must be taken to ensure that information about identifiable students is not published and that it is not possible to deduce the identity of students through the combination of multiple published datasets. Where data contains groups of less than 5 students in the data tables are displayed as <5, in the graphs it is displayed as 4. Subject Profiles : Big HESA Data Set Definition
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Subject Profiles : NSS (National Student Survey)
The National Student Survey (NSS) is an annual survey which gives
university and college students the chance to have their say about
what they liked and did not like about their student learning
experience during their time in higher education. The majority of
students who complete the survey are in their final year.
In the survey, statements are put to students who then rate their university/college and the course they took against these, answering on a five-point scale from 'definitely disagree' to 'definitely agree'. The groups of statements cover topics such as:
In some cases, course numbers may be combined so as to meet the thresholds for publication but for some courses there will be no other relevant data that will serve the purpose. If the subject is new to the university, information about it may not be available yet. The National Student Survey is run by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) on behalf of the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Department of Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DELNI) and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW). The survey is undertaken on their behalf by Ipsos MORI. The Guardian gives an explanation of how the NSS scores are calculated Subject Profiles : League Tables
The League table data is 'screen scrapped' from the Guardian, Times
and Sunday Times websites.
The Guardian provides the following metrics; Value-added score compares students individual degree results with their entry qualifications, to show how effective the teaching is. It is given as a rating out of 10 Staff-student ratio (SSR) is the number of students per member of teaching staff. The Times provides the following metrics; Research quality is a measure of the average quality of research Entry Standards is the average entry tariff means the typical Ucas scores of students currently studying in that department Student satisfaction is the percentage of final-year students satisfied with overall quality, based on the National Student Survey (NSS) Graduate prospects is the percentage of graduates who find graduate-level jobs, or are studying further, within six months of graduation The overall score out of 100 is a rating of excellence based on a combination of all the other factors Subject Profiles : JACS Principal Subject League Table position
This page displays all the University of Glasgows league table positions in one table to compare all the rankings.
The Big HESA Data set is compared against the Russell Group as the Russell Group are always the top Universities in these rankings NSS and League Tables are compared against ALL Universities as Russell Group Universities tend not to be the top Universities in these rankings We use a 'Traffic Light' colouring system to highlight those scores that are doing well and not so well. The Traffic lights use quartiles to colour code the scores;
Subject Profiles : How the KPI Data hangs together
The HESA UK Big Data sets associates every student in the UK with a
JACS
Principal Subject Subject Profiles : 1st 2.1 %
Calculated from the
classification of degree field and works out the % of students who
achieved a first class honours or upper second class honours. Subject Profiles : Continuation
We only have the University of Glasgow's continuation statistics as
continuation cannot be calculated from the Big HESA Data set as
there is no way of linking two students over two years worth of
data. We did query using the INSTANCE KEY field but were told this
changes every year. Subject Profiles : Entry Tariff
HESA gives us the tariff scores for the following students; Subject Profiles : International FTE
International students full-time equivalent totals. A student is
classed as International if they are NOT
eligible to pay home fees Subject Profiles : Post Graduate Taught (PGT) FTE
Post Graduate Taught (PGT) students full-time equivalent totals.
HESA provides this information in the Level of Study field
(F_XLEV501). We count a student as being PGT if the Level of Study
field is '2' Subject Profiles : PHDs Awarded
A student is classed as having being awarded a PHD if their level of qualification obtained F_XQLEV1003 is equal to '01' Doctorate
Subject Profiles : Progression
We only have the University of Glasgow's progression statistics as
continuation cannot be calculated from the Big HESA Data set as
there is no way of linking two students over two years worth of
data. We did query using the INSTANCE KEY field but were told this
changes every year. Subject Profiles : Post Graduate Research (PGR) FTE
Post Graduate Research (PGR) students full-time equivalent totals.
HESA provides this information in the Level of Study field
(F_XLEV501). We count a student as being PGR if the Level of Study
field is '1' Subject Profiles : Rest of the UK (RUK) FTE
Rest of the UK (RUK) students full-time equivalent totals. A student
is classed as RUK if they are
eligible to pay home fees and their DOMICILE is NOT Scotland Subject Profiles : Student Mobility
A Student is counted as Mobile if they have
mobility field entry in the HESA All UK Big HESA Data Set. We dont
inspect the
mobility field, just count the student as mobile if they have an
entry. Subject Profiles : Total Student FTE
Every students full-time equivalent totals. Subject Profiles : Undergraduate (UG) Student FTE
Undergraduate (UG) students full-time equivalent totals. HESA
provides this information in the Level of Study field (F_XLEV501).
We count a student as being UG if the Level of Study field is '3' or
'4' Multiple Deprivation (MD)Data is based on the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD): with Population Weighting as defined by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) identifying small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across Scotland: http://www.gla.ac.uk/media/media_289960_en.pdf Student FTE by College and School
This is a summary of student FTE for
each of the Colleges and University displaying totals for
Undergraduate, PGR and PGT students. The FTEs are derived from Full-Time
and Part-Time
students Session
population taken from the HESA
student returns from the past 5 years. Student FTE by Cost CentreThis is the same as 'Student FTE by College and School' the only difference being the FTEs are displayed by Cost Centre and not School. Every module a student is on a has an associated Cost Centre (as well as a College and School association). Student DisabilitiesCalculates Standard Registration population Undergraduate/PGR/PGT student full-time and part-time disability totals for the University using the HESA DISABLE field which records the type of disability that a student has, on the basis of the student's own self-assessment. Student Ethnicity
Calculates Standard
Registration population Undergraduate/PGR/PGT student ethnicity
totals for the all Colleges and the University using the HESA ETHNIC
field which records the students ethnicity. Student Social ClassCalculates Standard Registration population Undergraduate student full-time and part-time socio-economic classification totals for the Colleges and University using the HESA SEC field which records the socio-economic classification of students participating in HE if 21 or over at the start of their course or parental classification if under 21 Degree ClassificationCalculates from ALL the students (NOT JUST Standard Registration population) Undergraduate student full-time and part-time degree classification totals for the Colleges and University using the HESA CLASS field which indicates the qualification class that the student obtained. Term-time AccommodationCalculates from the students Standard Registration population Undergraduate/PGR/PGT student full-time and part-time term time accommodation totals for the University using the HESA TTACOM field which records where the student is living during the current year. Progression
Progression is when a student appears in one years HESA Student
return and also appears in the following years HESA return with YEARPRG
incremented. Only UK Full Time First Degree Standard
Registration population students are included. Students who have an
ENDDATE
set but the ENDATE is after the 1st of December are counted in the
progression calculation.
First degree includes first degrees (including eligibility to register to practice with a health or social care or veterinary statutory regulatory body), first degrees with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)/registration with a General Teaching Council (GTC), postgraduate bachelors degree at level H, enhanced first degrees (including those leading towards obtaining eligibility to register to practice with a health or social care or veterinary statutory regulatory body), first degrees obtained concurrently with a diploma and intercalated first degrees. UK students are those students who have a DOMICILE code of Great Britain, Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, UK or UK Not otherwise specified. FAQ Do the progression rates take any account of repeaters? I suspect that they include only students who progress in the minimum time and therefore exclude repeaters, who might take 3 years to get from level 1 to level 3 rather than the minimum of 2. (I am particularly interested in the fraction of students who progress to level 3 and the impact of allowing students to repeat; practice varies significantly in my college.) Progression uses YEARPRG, If a student needs to repeat a year then the YEARPRG will be changed back. So they would be classed as non-progression. (they would be counted as continued though) I presume that the progression rates from level 2 to 3 include direct entrants to level 2, who may have a significant effect in some schools. Yes, A direct entrant to year 2 should have YEARPRG 2 Do we have access to further breakdowns of the data? There is no further breakdown for progression on QlikView, we only have continuation data breakdowns on QV. Do the numbers for Psychology, Geography, Mathematics and Computing Science include all programmes, with those based in other colleges (MA and MA Soc Sci) as well as the BSc in CoSE? We work out the school and college by the plan owner, a plan could be owned by two Colleges or two schools. Continuation
Continuation is when a student appears in one years HESA Student
return and also appears in the following years HESA return HESA Headcounts
