Mrs Catherine Omand, Senior Academic Policy Manager
Under Summer Powers 2018, Academic Standards Committee received and approved the Report of the Periodic Subject Review of School of Education and associated recommendation. The recommendations contained within the report were approved for onward transmission to those identified for action. This report details the responses and the progress made to date in implementing the recommendations.
As the Convener of the Review Panel has retired, the response from the School of Education has been considered by Professor Frank Coton, who oversees the Periodic Subject Review process.
The introductory comments on the PSR process are noted including the concerns that issues of resource constraint have not been adequately addressed through PSR. It is unfortunate that the School did not find the PSR experience particularly positive and this contrasts with feedback received from other areas. PSR is intended to focus on ensuring the quality of the student experience and engagement with quality enhancement within the School or Subject. This is undertaken in the context of the resources available to the School or Subject as PSR does not play any formal role in the University’s budget planning and allocation process. However, in some cases concerns relating to resource allocation may receive some attention during PSR if they are perceived to have potential impact on the student experience. In such cases PSR recommendations can be drawn to the attention of the relevant budget holders for consideration in the normal resource allocation processes to ensure that Colleges are appropriately informed of any potential risks to the quality of the student experience which potentially relate to resourcing.
A review of the PSR process is currently underway given that we are nearing the end of the third cycle (see paper ASC 18/67).
