Programme Proposal: MLitt Design Intersections at The Glasgow School of Art
Cover Sheet
Robbie Mulholland, Clerk, Joint Liaison Committee of the University of Glasgow and The Glasgow School of Art
The attached paper is a proposal from The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) for the introduction of the MLitt Design Intersections programme commencing in September 2019. The Programme Proposal was approved by GSA’s Executive Group on 1 May 2018. The original version of this paper was submitted to the May 2018 meeting of ASC.
The minute of that meeting noted with regard to this item, that ‘there was limited information on the structure of the programme and its assessment’ and also that concern had been expressed regarding ‘facilities being stretched and the need to appropriately manage students’ expectations.’ ASC agreed that it was unable to give in-principle approval to the programme proposal until these matters had been resolved. GSA was invited to advise ASC once the relevant issues had been addressed.
GSA has now re-worked the original submission and the revised proposal enclosed here provides additional information (highlighted in red text) with regard to the following:
- Programme Structure and Delivery
- Schedule of Teaching and Assessment
- Number of Credits
- Level
- Timescale/Duration of Study
- Information on Resources and Facilities
The paper states that ‘the proposed Master of Letters (MLitt) in Design Intersections (Fashion Narrative/ Material Culture/Design Writing) is a one-year (12 months) full-time / two-year (24 months) part-time taught postgraduate programme led by the Department of Design History and Theory (DH&T) in the School of Design (SoD) at The Glasgow School of Art (GSA).’
The proposed programme ‘will offer full and part-time (‘low residency’) study, with an MLitt gained after 12 months/24 months of study (180-credits). Part-time study will only be available for Home/EU students. If approved, the part-time study mode of delivery will be confirmed during the Programme Approval process, and the course/credit structure has been devised to enable full-time and part-time cohorts to be taught together. Part-time study will allow freelance and part-time workers and practitioners in early career stages to develop their research skills through personal projects relevant to their interests and employment.’
ASC is asked to consider and approve in-principle, the introduction of the MLitt Design Intersections at GSA, commencing in September 2019.
