Programme Proposal: MDes Silversmithing & Jewellery at The Glasgow School of Art
Cover Sheet
Robbie Mulholland, Clerk, Joint Liaison Committee of the University of Glasgow and The Glasgow School of Art
The attached paper is a proposal from The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) for the introduction of the MDes Silversmithing & Jewellery programme commencing in September 2019. The Programme Proposal was approved by GSA’s Executive Group on 1 May 2018.
The original version of this paper was submitted to the May 2018 meeting of ASC. The minutes of that meeting noted with regard to this item, that ‘insufficient information had been provided in terms of the structure of the programme and the assessment to allow in-principle agreement to be confirmed.’ Furthermore, ASC noted that the programme proposal ‘indicated that it would be a full-time programme lasting 24 months, but no information was provided as to the total number of credits associated with the programme or how the courses and the associated assessment would be structured across the two years.’
ASC noted also that ‘a concern had been raised (page 9, section d. (of the original paper)) concerning a potential lack of space for non-bench work, and that this would require a review of the use of space for studio and workshop. The scale of this issue and the actions required to address it were not clear.’
ASC agreed that it was unable to give in-principle approval to the programme proposal until these matters had been resolved. GSA was invited to advise ASC once the relevant issues had been addressed.
GSA has now re-worked the original submission and the revised proposal enclosed here comprises the original paper along with an annex (pages 11-13) outlining the following further information:
- Programme Structure and Delivery
- Schedule of Teaching and Assessment
- Number of Credits
- Level
- Timescale/Duration of Study
- Information on Resources and Facilities
The proposal states that ‘the Silversmithing and Jewellery department at GSA has delivered a highly successful and influential undergraduate programme (or equivalent) since 1892 and now looks to broaden the department’s scope by introducing a new 2 year Masters programme that builds on the department’s expertise and expansive research interests.’
ASC is asked to consider and approve in-principle, the introduction of the MDes Silversmithing & Jewellery at GSA, commencing in September 2019.
