The Glasgow School of Art: Major Programme Amendment Proposal – MLitt Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art)

Cover Sheet

Brief description of the paper

The attached paper proposes a major programme amendment to the MLitt Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art) run jointly by The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) and the University of Glasgow. The proposal has been brought forward by the School of Fine Art (GSA) and was approved by GSA’s Executive Group in June 2017.

The key amendments being proposed are:

  • Replacing the Research Methods in Practice course (currently delivered by the University of Glasgow), with the School of Fine Art’s upcoming Core Research Skills and Methodologies course;
  • Adjusting the credit structure of the component courses in line with GSA’s PGT Credit Reform;
  • Adapting the learning narrative and teaching methods in the core courses Curatorial Practice 1 and Curatorial Practice 2 in order to enable a more productive balance between theory and practice;
  • Reviewing the course descriptors for the Master’s Project and Dissertation; and
  • Simplifying the assessment pattern to only two summative assignments per course - one being a project and the other a piece of writing - and the introduction of a formative point for each, so students can receive feedback while their ideas are still developing and learning taking place. In Stage 3, the proposal is to reduce the word-counts for the Dissertation and the Master’s Project Essay in order to match the word-counts used in MLitt programmes at the University’s School of Culture and Creative Arts.

In the event that this proposal is approved by Academic Standards Committee (ASC), the School of Fine Art intends to develop the approval documentation in session 2017/18 ready for consideration and approval by GSA’s Undergraduate and Postgraduate (UPC) Programme Approval meeting in November 2017. A report on the action taken at the UPC Programme Approval meeting will be submitted to ASC in January 2018.
