Brief description of the paper

At the meeting on 12 February 2016, ASC received the responses to recommendations arising from the Review of Classics held on 4 December 2014. The Convener of the Review Panel considered that the recommendations had been mainly, given full and appropriate consideration, however Academic Standards Committee requested updates on the following recommendations:

  • Recommendation 1: The School response addressed learning and teaching but did not address plans for a coherent strategic vision in terms of future growth with no reference to an action plan;
  • Recommendation 4: This response was unclear as it was not clear if only Single Honours are expected to attend. The Committee considered it important for further consideration to be given to the alternative arrangements in place to ensure the ILOs are still met for those unable to attend and for this to be communicated clearly in the student handbook;
  • Recommendation 5: The arrangements for funding were acceptable for session 2015; however future funding remained uncertain.
  • Recommendation 6: ASC noted the subject area’s development of grade descriptors for translation from Latin to Greek due to be introduced in 2016-17. An update on the progress and effectiveness of this development should be given;
  • Recommendation 15: ASC noted with interest the subject area’s consideration of the Buddy System and requested a further update on the progress of this development to be given.
