Brief description of the paper 

The attached report provides an update regarding Programme Approval and Major Programme Amendment Recommendations from a Programme Approval event held in February 2015 at the Glasgow School of Art. The recommendations related to the following programmes:

  • Master of Research
  • MDes Fashion and Textiles
  • MLitt Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art)
  • BA (Hons) Fashion Design and BA (Hons) Textile Design
  • BA (Hons) Interaction Design

Programme Approval

Master of Research

Recommendation 1

The Programme Team should undertake an Equality Impact Assessment on the programme in session 2015/16.

GSA has confirmed that an Equality Impact Assessment on the programme has now been undertaken.

Major Programme Amendment

MDes Fashion and Textiles

Recommendation 1

The Programme Team should undertake an Equality Impact Assessment on the programme in session 2015/16.

GSA has confirmed that an Equality Impact Assessment on the programme has now been undertaken.

Recommendation 2

The Programme Team should reflect on whether the MDes Fashion and Textiles could be offered in the part-time mode in the course of 2015/16 and make recommendations as appropriate in the School’s forthcoming Periodic Review.

GSA has confirmed that, following consideration, the part-time mode was removed from offer. In 11 years of the programme there has been no expressions of interest from applicants in undertaking the programme on a part-time basis.

MLitt Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art)

Recommendation 1

An Equality Impact Assessment should be undertaken prior to the end of 2014/15 and also include consideration of the proposed amendment.

GSA has confirmed that an Equality Impact Assessment was undertaken in summer 2015 and approved by GSA Undergraduate and Postgraduate Committee.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design and BA (Hons) Textile Design

Recommendation 1

The Programme Team should undertake an Equality Impact Assessment on the programme in session 2015/16.

GSA has confirmed that an Equality Impact Assessment has now been undertaken.

Recommendation 2

The Programme Team should develop course approval documentation for courses which would be offered to incoming exchange and study abroad students.

GSA has confirmed that study abroad and exchange course specification have now been produced.

BA (Hons) Interaction Design

Recommendation 1

Representatives from the School of Design and the Digital Design Studio should consult, as appropriate, regarding the proposed nomenclature of the BDes (Hons) Digital Culture.

GSA has confirmed that the name change from Digital Culture to Interaction Design was discussed with staff from the Digital Design Studio and no objections were raised.

Recommendation 2

The Programme Team should undertake an Equality Impact Assessment on the programme in session 2015/16.

GSA has confirmed that an Equality Impact Assessment has now been undertaken.

Academic Standards Committee is asked to note the actions taken above in relation to the recommendations for each programme (see attached paper).
