Degree Regulation Amendment - MSc Visualisation Programme, The Glasgow School of Art

Brief description of the paper

The attached paper is a proposal from the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) seeking Academic Standards Committee approval for an amendment to the regulations governing the award of the MSc Visualisation with Merit, or with Distinction.

The proposed change will apply to the three pathways of the MSc Visualisation programme - namely the MSc in International Heritage Visualisation, the MSc in Medical Visualisation and Human Anatomy and the MSc in Serious Games and Virtual Reality.

The proposal seeks approval to have the basis on which the MSc Visualisation is awarded with Merit, or with Distinction amended such that results obtained in both the taught component and the dissertation (or other substantial independent work element of the programme) will contribute to the final award.

At present, the regulations only take account of results obtained in the dissertation or other substantial independent work element of the programme. (In 2014/15, the MDes, MLitt, MFA, MEd and MRes also transferred to these regulations.)

The proposal means that the regulations governing the MSc Visualisation will revert to the previous generic taught Masters regulations whereby the award of the degree with Merit, or with Distinction is calculated on the basis of the results obtained in both the taught component and the dissertation or other substantial independent work element. This will align the MSc Visualisation with GSA’s MSc and MArch programmes and similar degrees offered by the University of Glasgow (UoG).

GSA and UoG programme teams both consider that this proposal will give greater recognition to consistency of student performance across the entire academic year.
