The attached paper provides responses to an action identified from the College of Arts CAM, presented to ASC in February 2016, which proposed an alternative calculation for the classification of PGT degrees with regard to the award of Merits and distinctions.

Seventeen responses were received from PGT programme conveners and a summary of the responses are as follows:

Six were in favour of revising the regulations as proposed;

Three did not support revision of the current regulations;

Four reported that this was not an issue of concern;

Four reported concerns with the regulations relating to the dissertation.

The following were identified as useful practice:

MLitt Film & Television Studies - to address issues with performance in the dissertation, the subject areas has introduced a dissertation workshop for students with support and preparation meetings for the dissertation planning taking place earlier.

MLitt Dress & Textiles Histories – runs a methodology course in semester 1 which has formative assessment exercises built into a number of the classes.

ASC is asked to consider the responses to determine whether further consideration of this issue is required.
