Proposed Changes to Generic Regulations for Taught Masters Degrees

Cover Sheet

Professor John H Davies, Dean of Learning & Teaching, College of Science & Engineering

Brief description of the paper

It is proposed to align the generic regulations for taught masters programmes with the regulations for undergraduate programmes so that a D grade is considered as 'satisfactory' throughout. This would resolve inconsistent treatment of integrated (MSci/MEng) and standalone (MSc) masters programmes in the College of Science and Engineering, both of which are at SCQF level 11 but are governed by different regulations.

Associated with this, Engineering requires sharper regulations to meet the requirements of professional accreditation and would like to do so with minimum disturbance to the generic regulations.

Action Requested

ASC is asked to (re-)consider whether generic regulations for taught masters programmes can be revised so that D becomes the threshold grade, as it is for undergraduate programmes.

ASC is also asked to advise Engineering on the best way of implementing the changes required for professional accreditation.

Recommended Person/s responsible for taking action(s) forward

Dean of Learning and Teaching, Science and Engineering, with support of Senate Office, to develop complete regulations if the proposal is accepted.

Convenor of ASC for implementation of new regulations.

Resource implications

None in steady state; regulations and all documents that depend on them would need to be revised if the proposal is accepted.

Timescale for Implementation

Ideally in the University Calendar for session 2016-17.

Equality implications

None identified.
