Cover Sheet

Brief description of the paper

The attached report outlines a proposal from the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) for the development of the MDes Silversmithing and Jewellery. The proposal was fully approved, in principle, by GSA’s Executive Group in September 2015.

GSA has delivered a successful undergraduate programme (or equivalent) in Silversmithing and Jewellery since 1892 and now seeks to broaden its scope by introducing a new MDes that builds on existing expertise and research interests.

The current undergraduate programme attracts students from a large international pool including:- Japan, North America and China. The MDes Silversmithing and Jewellery has been developed in response to positive feedback from potential students (both local and overseas) which suggests a high demand for taught postgraduate provision in this subject.

Subject to approval by Academic Standards Committee, Programme Approval documentation will be developed by GSA early in session 2015-16 and submitted to the University in April 2016.

GSA aims to recruit and enrol the first cohort in September 2016.
