Periodic Subject Review: Responses to Recommendations Arising from the Report of the Review of Philosophy held on 12 and 13 March 2014

Cover Sheet

Ryan Reed, Clerk to the Review Panel

Brief description of the paper

At its meeting on 23 May 2014, the Academic Standards Committee received the Report of Periodic Subject Review of the Philosophy. The recommendations contained within the report were approved for onward transmission to those identified for action. This report details the responses and the progress made to date in implementing the recommendations. The Convener considers that the Panel’s recommendations have been, as far as possible, given full and appropriate consideration with the exception of recommendations 7, 10, 11 and 13.

Action Requested

Academic Standards Committee is asked to consider the adequacy of the responses and the progress made, particularly in relation to:

Recommendation 7 - ASC is asked to consider whether to request an update on progress at a future meeting.

Recommendation 10 – ASC is requested to consider the responses.

Recommendation 11 - ASC is asked to consider the responses. A response has yet to be received from the Head of School.

Clerks note: The Convener would like to clarify that the intent of this recommendation was to bring into focus the SSR of the Subject at the time of the review and to prompt a discussion between the School and the Subject in the first instance. The purpose of the Review was to promote enhancement, and therefore the proportionately high SSR had been highlighted as part of the recommendations - it was not for the Review Panel to dictate budgets directly. The intent was that the Subject make a case to the School, and the School (if it deems appropriate) should then make a case to the College of Arts regarding any desired budgetary changes.

Recommendation 13 – A response has yet to be received from the Head of School.
