Cover Sheet

Brief description of the paper

At its meeting on 23 May 2014, the Academic Standards Committee received the Report of Periodic Subject Review of the Philosophy. The recommendations contained within the report were approved for onward transmission to those identified for action.

ASC noted that recommendations 1 and 4 were recorded as 'urgent' and required an update to the November meeting of ASC. It was agreed that recommendations 1, 2 and 4 should be completed in advance of the new term beginning in September 2014. Additionally, the Subject should be asked to provide an update on activity in relation to recommendations 1, 2, 4, 5 and 13 in November 2014.

This report details the responses and the progress made to date in implementing the recommendations. The remainder of the recommendations will be responded to at the May meeting of ASC.

Action Requested

Academic Standards Committee is asked to consider the adequacy of the responses and the progress made.

Academic Standards Committee is asked to consider whether recommendation 13 should be redirected for the attention of the Head of Subject and the School of Humanities. A response should consider the effective planning for the use of GTAs, within the constraints of the current budget allocations, not only the adequacy and/or equity of the budget formula. It is suggested that this would be best considered initially at Subject and School level, as set out in the response from Head of College.

Recommended Person/s responsible for taking action(s) forward

None identified.

Resource implications

No direct resource implications have been identified.

Timescale for Implementation

As outlined.

Equality implications

No specific implications identified, although the School should continue to embed consideration of equality and diversity in all its procedures and provision.
