Cover Sheet

Mrs Ruth Cole, Clerk to the Review Panel

Brief description of the paper

At its meeting on 25 May 2012, the Academic Standards Committee received the Report of the Periodic Subject Review of the School of Physics and Astronomy. The recommendations contained within the report were approved for onward transmission to those identified for action. This report details the responses and the progress made to date in implementing the recommendations. As the Convener of the Panel has now retired, the report has been referred to the Vice-Principal (Learning & Teaching), who considers that the Panel’s recommendations have been, as far as possible, given full and appropriate consideration, subject to the comments below.

Action Requested

Academic Standards Committee is asked to:

  1. Consider the adequacy of the responses and the progress made.
  2. Note that under Recommendation 2, while there is an open acknowledgment of the need to improve access in the Kelvin Building, resource constraints have meant that it has not been possible to progress this issue.
  3. Consider, under Recommendation 5, requiring additional formality to be introduced into the provision of feedback to demonstrators, e.g. standard guidance being given to lab heads on the topics to be covered in verbal feedback.
  4. Refer the comment under Recommendation 11 to the Vice-Principal (Learning & Teaching), for information.
Recommended Person/s responsible for taking action(s) forward

As identified in the report.

Resource implications

No direct resource implications have been identified.

Timescale for Implementation

As outlined.

Equality implications

No specific implications identified, although the School should continue to embed consideration of equality and diversity in all its procedures and provision.
