University Guidelines for Boards of Examiners on the Exercise of Discretion

Brief description of the paper 

In June 2012 Senate approved the recommended proposals concerning criteria to be taken into account in considering whether to promote students who were in the discretionary zones for Honours classifications or in discretionary zones - on the basis of taught course results - for the award of merit or distinction at PGT level. It was also agreed that the approved principles for discretion would be written into clear guidance which would be added to the Guide to the Code of Assessment.

Action Requested 

ASC is invited to consider the draft Guidance and advise on its clarity and usefulness for staff who will be involved in the assessment process and consideration of borderline candidates.

Note: there is no intention that the approved proposals on the permitted methods of discretion should be reconsidered.

Recommended Person/s responsible for taking action(s) forward 

Senate Office will take forward the finalisation of the Guidance and its dissemination to Colleges, Schools and Assessment Officers.
