Brief description of the paper 

Report of meeting held on 2 February 2012.

Action Requested 

 Items for approval

1. ASC is asked to approve amended principles for the assessment of visiting students.

2. ASC is asked to approve ARSC's proposal that there be no narrowing of the zones of discretion available to Examination Boards in relation to:

  • Undergraduate degree classifications, and
  • The award of merit and distinction for generic PGT programmes.

3. ASC is asked to approve ARSC's proposals:

  • that the provisions concerning Incomplete Assessment and Good Cause be amended, to the effect that all good cause claims should be submitted to MyCampus,
  • that SLP be invited to consider how such a change to procedure could be implemented, and
  • that the necessary change be made to regulations only once there is confidence that MyCampus is able and ready to support such a change.

4. Operation of Code of Assessment for professional programmes

ASC is invited to note:

  • The School of Veterinary Medicine's interim report on plans for the introduction of credit rating
  • That no response has yet been received from the School of Medicine on this issue
  • That ARSC will report to a later meeting of ASC on the feasibility of generating overall course grades where assessment has been carried out under both Schedules A and B.
  • That ARSC is taking forward clarification of regulations concerned with award of honours and commendation, and incomplete assessment and good cause.

5. Proposed combined MRes and PGT generic regulations

ASC is invited to note that the Convener of ARSC will meet with the Deans of Graduate Studies Group with a view to reaching agreement on outstanding issues. Proposed regulations will be brought to a later meeting of ASC for approval.

Recommended Person/s responsible for taking action(s) forward 

ARSC will take forward further work on issues under discussion; Senate Office will take forward incorporation of regulatory changes into the University Calendar 2012-13 and the development and dissemination of supporting guidance.
