Monitoring of Degree Classification Data

Cover Sheet

Ms H Butcher, Clerk to the Committee

Brief description of the paper

Previously, ASC received data on degree classifications which provided subject level comparisons across Russell Group Institutions and also Scottish Institutions. This data, which was provided by HESA, had been requested the SMG Learning and Teaching Segment which is no longer in operation. The data considered by ASC in Feburary 2010 covered the four academic sessions 2002/03 – 2006/07. A request was made to HESA for similar data to be provided for the next three sessions (2007/8 – 2009/10) for ASC to consider; however the charges quoted to the University were considered to be prohibitive.

Instead, Planning Office data for the University has been provided which is based on the statistics provided in the University’s HESA return. (No comparative data for the rest of the Russell Group and Scottish Institutions is therefore available).

The data for Glasgow shows, by HESA Subject Code, student performance over the last three sessions in terms of the percentage achieving 1st class Honours and, good Honours degrees (1st class and 2.1). Cohort figures are also shown to demonstrate where small numbers may have an impact on the fluctuation of performance over the three years.
