Brief description of the paper 

A report on various issues arising from the meeting of ARSC held on 3 September 2010.

Action Requested 

ASC is asked to:

Joint Honours

1.  Approve the proposed amended definition of Joint/Combined Honours for inclusion in the generic undergraduate regulations.

2.  Endorse ARSC's view that irrespective of the number of credits, the contribution of both subjects should be equally weighted in calculation of the final Joint Honours classification.

3.  Consider whether a definition of Principal-Subsidiary degrees should be introduced into the generic undergraduate regulation.

Reassessment

4.  Endorse ARSC's interpretation of the regulations on eligibility for reassessment.

Incomplete assessment

5.  Approve proposed clarification in the regulations governing Incomplete Assessment on PGT programmes.

Review of non-generic Masters regulations

6.  Approve the deletion of obsolete provisions in the University Calendar for non-generic Masters awards.

7.  Approve the proposal for a review, led by ARSC in consultation with RPSC, of Masters research programme regulations.

8.  Note the list of non-generic Masters programmes where no rationalisation or updating is proposed.

ELIR report - discretion in Honours classification

9.  Consider the means of addressing the issues raised in the ELIR report concerning exercise of discretion in recommendation of Honours classification.

Matters to note

10.  Note that ARSC will report to a later meeting on:

  • Timing and duration of examinations
  • FQAEO's reported concerns regarding application of the Code of Assessment
  • Remit and membership of ARSC.
Recommended Person/s responsible for taking action(s) forward 

ARSC in conjunction with Senate Office will take forward agreed actions including the preparation of regulations where appropriate.

Timescale for Implementation 

Agreed interpretation of regulations to be implemented immediately, and new/revised regulations to be prepared for inclusion in the 2011-12 University Calendar.
