Brief description of the paper

At its meeting on 29 May 2009, Academic Standards Committee received the Report of the Review of Departmental Programmes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment of the Department of Scottish Literature held on 24 February 2009. Following consideration by the Committee, the recommendations were forwarded for action to the relevant staff. The attached report summarises the responses and confirms the progress to date.

Action Requested

The Convener of the Panel has reviewed the responses and in some cases is not satisfied that the recommendations have been addressed seriously. The Convener has made the following suggestions for ASC to consider:

1. whether a further update on Recommendations 1, 2, 3, 12 should be sought for May 2011;

2. the adequacy of responses to Recommendations 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12.

ASC is also invited to consider whether any further action should be taken in relation to the response to Recommendation 9.

The Convener also made the following observations:

A. Recommendation 10 appears to be irresolvable given current HR, Library and IT systems;

B. Recommendation 11 should read either ‘Post-Doctoral Researchers’ or ‘Doctoral Students’ – the fact that the Department did not pick it up at the draft stage of report is considered to be symptomatic of an apparent lack of engagement in the process.
