Review of Departmental Programmes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment: Responses to the Recommendations arising from the Review of the Department of Mathematics on 12 and 13 February 2009

Cover Sheet

Mrs Catherine Omand , Clerk to the Review Panel

Brief description of the paper

The Academic Standards Committee received and reviewed the Report of the Review of Departmental Programmes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment of the Departmental of Mathematics held on 12 and 13 February 2009 under summer 2009 powers. The recommendations contained within the report were approved for onward transmission to those identified for action. This report details the responses and the progress made to date in implementing the recommendations.

The report has been considered by the Vice-Principal (Learning and Teaching), (as both the Convener and Senate Assessor involved in the Review have since retired) who is satisfied that the Panel’s recommendations have been given full and appropriate consideration. However, the Vice-Principal (Learning and Teaching) would draw attention to two points:

  • Recommendation 8 – provision of rooms for small group tutorials is an Estates and Buildings issue and should be drawn to their attention
  • Recommendation 11 – although some consideration had been given to adequate use of ‘open’ office hours and other advisory and support mechanisms, it is recommended that an undertaking is given to review this again, following the formation of the new school of Mathematics and Statistics, as the merger of the two departments may create scope to enhance this area
  • Recommendation 22 – additional comments noted.
Action Requested

Academic Standards Committee is requested to consider the adequacy of the responses and the progress made. Academic Standards Committee is particularly asked to consider the following:

  • Draw the attention of Estates and Buildings to Recommendation 8
  • Following the formation of the new school of Mathematics and Statistics, seek further progress in relation to Recommendation 11.
