Departmental Programmes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment: Additional Responses to the Recommendations arising from the Review of Economics held on 24 January 2008

Brief description of the paper 

At the meeting on 29 May 2009, Academic Standards Committee requested a further update to responses to recommendations arising from the Review of the Department of Economics held on 24 January 2008, in relation to the Report’s following Recommendations:

  • Recommendation 2: continuation of plans to improve formative element of assessments and feedback for undergraduates and postgraduates;
  • Recommendation 3: extension of remit of Assessment Working Group to support new assessment practices and promotion of enquiry-led learning at Levels 1 and 2;
  • Recommendation 5: the inclusion of marks from study abroad in the student’s final grade;
  • Recommendation 8: feeding back students’ comments to the Careers Service to ensure consistency of advice provided and usefulness of Careers Fair;
  • Recommendation 9: encouraging students to engage with employability from programme outset, by offering employability related workshops in Levels 1 and 2 and considering embedding employability in curriculum development;
  • Recommendation 11: reviewing PGT programme structures to offer flexibility of choice and avoid duplication of study;
  • Recommendation 18: movement towards the inclusion of tutorials within all courses and that, in particular, smaller group sessions be an integral part of PG programmes in the future;
  • Recommendation 19: the appointment of student representatives as full members on teaching committees and consideration of the appointment of a student to its departmental committee.
