Monitoring of Three Year Degrees - Faculty Feedback

Cover Sheet

Ms H Butcher, Clerk to the Committee

Brief description of the paper

Following discussion at the last meeting of ASC regarding the monitoring of three year degrees, it was agreed that the faculties of Arts and LBSS would be invited to provide detail of their processes for determining students’ eligibility for the three year degrees in order to ensure that these were sufficiently robust. The feedback provided by each faculty is presented in the following two papers (ASC 08/43a and ASC 08/43b).

One of the main concerns in the Committee’s discussion at the previous meeting, had been whether there was an over-reliance on only one or two individuals in the process of validating three year degrees in each faculty. The response from the Faculty of Arts makes clear that there is a group of at least five staff available to undertake the checks. LBSS have also confirmed that there are two faculty administrators who assist the Chief Adviser, plus Senior Advisers are also available if required as backup for the Chief Adviser. Similarly, in the Faculties of Science, the checks for the eligibility of the three year designated degrees are undertaken by pairs of staff, with two senior faculty administrators, Senior Advisers and the Chief Adviser all being able to cover this process.
